FORGED IN FIRE! And Other Strange Tales

Hey Fiends,

It’s been one helluva week in the field for us! At the moment, I’m ‘still’ coming down from a string of badass concerts at The State Theatre. And there’s lot’s ‘more’ coming on the horizon. I’m sure many of you local Floridians have noticed that we’re putting the ‘Peddle To The METAL’ and booking lot’s of great shows at the Theatre. You’ll always see the best concerts at this historic venue, and I’m truly honored to be a main player at the venue. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the best bands in the WORLD for the past 7+ years. You’ll always see something cool there just about every night. Most of the locals who are reading this have probably had some of your best concert experiences at State Theatre. And ‘sometimes’ it’s a non-stop experience. Take this past week for instance.

On Thursday we had the band BLUE CROSS which featured TONY ROMBOLA & SHANNON LARKIN from GODSMACK. It was wild to see them step out of their metal element and play some ‘smokin’ Bluesy Rock. If ‘that’ wasn’t historic enough, they were joined onstage by legendary Blues Rock Guitarist ERIC GALES. And YES, we have pics of this historic moment on the State Theatre stage. When we return to the airwaves on March 2nd, we’ll have an in-depth backstage interview with Tony & Shannon. It was a night of kickass rock that was ‘classic’ all around!! The lineup of bands was also stellar, and good friends of ours. It featured BREAKING BLUES, RELENTLESS, AZZITIZZ, 3 KILLER BUDS, and AARON LOVELESS. All these acts should be proud to have been involved in a historic event like this. Something like this will probably never happen again..Well, until GODSMACK end their tour which starts next week..Then..Maybe

On Friday we had that kickass FRIDAY THE 13th FEST. The local shows are rare at State Theatre, but when they happen..They HAPPEN!! We love the local shows because it’s like a huge party for us. I can still do my job and have fun with all our friends. I don’t have a Tour Manager breathing down my neck. I don’t have to deal with any demands from National Acts. I don’t have to rush the openers offstage (well, sorta, haha). The local shows are always a celebration of our massive metal scene down here in Tampa Bay. And The Rock Solid Pressure Show has always supported our scene. Damn, we helped ‘create’ it right? So needless to say, we had an amazing time on Friday night. The lineup was insane..We had scene favorites DEMENTIA, DIDGES CHRIST SUPERDRUM, INTO THE GRAVE, SAHE, WICKED REVOLUTION, COUNTED OUT, UNDERTONE..Put another notch in the belt for the local metal scene. This show was AMAZING!!

On Saturday night (feeling a bit worn out at this point) we had our friends in ANVIL roll through. And yes, they have become friends of ours over the past 4 years or so. We have a running joke at the Theatre with the guys from Anvil. I ‘never’ let them leave the stage unless they play FORGED IN FIRE for me (haha) So how did this start? Well, about 4 years ago. fresh off the success of their acclaimed movie ‘The Story Of Anvil’. State Theatre took a chance on booking them. Why not? It launched them back into the spotlight, and it was well worth the risk. The band basically vanished into obscurity in the 80’s, when all along they continued to make albums. Thank the metal gods for that movie, and their rise from the ashes. I was a huge fan of their first couple albums. Especially FORGED IN FIRE. That was one of the best metal albums of all time. The title track is one of the best METAL SONGS of all time.

When we first met Anvil at State Theatre 4 years ago. I was ‘positive’ that their closing song was going to be ‘Forged In Fire’, along with ‘Metal On Metal’ (of course). But can you imagine my dismay after ‘attempting’ to end their show with ‘Metal On Metal’ and NOT playing FORGED IN FIRE (??) Oh no, no, no, no, I could not let this happen. I freaked out!! I got the band out of the dressing room and BACK on the stage to play the song. Are you kidding me? I waited almost 30 years to see this. The guys were very gracious and complied. The whole thing was kinda funny really, and it sparked a friendship with the band. So NOW, every time they come through, they fuck with me a bit, and make like they are not going to play it. Lips always looks at my glaring face at stage left with my arms crossed. Then he says ‘I can’t leave without doing this for my buddy’..And I rush to the front of the stage with the crowd and enjoy one of the best metal songs of all time. And YES!! It was like that on Saturday night. Not only have Lips and Rob ‘forged’ friendships with us, but they bonded with some of the bigger local acts down here as well. So lots of musicians who also know the band, always come to the Anvil show. Our friends RAYNUS, JONZEY, and BRIAN from THE DOOD were in tow on Saturday night. They also know the band, and we all had a ‘wild’ time backstage. In fact, I had this real ‘deep’ conversation with Lips about the internet, no electricity, and the whole ‘Rock Is Dead’ thing.

I’m sure you all have seen Lip’s comment about ‘Rock Is Dead’ on your favorite metal news page. It kinda went viral, and he took some heat. He was basically just putting his spin onto what Gene Simmons said. Anyway, you’ll all HEAR this conversation on the next Rock Solid Pressure Show. This will clear ‘everything’ up and calm people down a bit. Man, I hope our interview goes viral (haha) We could certainly use the ratings. After 13 years of doing the show (and living with the ups and downs of ratings) It would be nice to have something go viral. Anyway, ANVIL crushed it on stage. ALL the bands on this show crushed it. There were 2 other bands on the tour that we really bonded with as well. LORD DYING and SUNLORD. You’ll be hearing their music on our next broadcast. The opening acts were all friends of ours (of course) ROCKSTARR BENTLEY, 20 SHADES, CONSINITY, AUTUMNS PAIN..By the end of the night, I could barely drive home..What a week in the field!!

So, last night on the broadcast. We decided to just fry your face with new metal. And it was ‘mission accomplished’..Your face fried while Patty and myself struggled to stay awake. We featured an inebriated interview with IRON REAGAN’s axeman MARK BRONZINO. We bonded with this amazing Punk/Metal hybrid at the NAPALM DEATH / VOIVOD show a few weeks back. That tour is still on the road so don’t miss it when it rolls through your town

Turned On And Tuned In

Hey Fiends,

First off, I’d like to thank everybody for tuning in to our ‘Stoner Special’ last night. I know we appeal to a lot of Stoners, but man, the ratings were through the roof!! Most ‘Metal Heads’ are huge Stoners anyway, so our special appealed to a broad range of listeners. Unlike our annual ‘420 Special’, last night’s playlist was mostly NEW tracks. We’ve been seeing an influx of amazing Stoner bands that are taking huge contracts these days. It’s true, a lot of the major labels that we deal with are now pulling these bands from the underground and bringing them to the masses. We’ve been receiving so much ‘mind altering’ music, that we decided to throw some together and make a party of it. We kept our ‘dark’ edge, and the music was still heavy enough to please our legion of Metal fans. It was like a gathering of the tribes. For 13 years, the Rock Solid Pressure Show has been turning you on to some of the coolest music on the planet. And we’re old enough to have seen many trends come and go in the industry. As long as it meets our criteria and fits our format, then we’ll turn you on to it. For the past couple years, we’ve been noticing this rise of the Stoner Bands, and we LOVE IT!! A lot of it has that late 60’s, 70’s sound. I survived both of those decades. I was born in 1960 and I remember all the great bands when they were NEW!! Sure, I rolled with the times, became a ‘metal’ musician after I heard ‘Sabbath’ (Like most of my peers haha). But I will never lose my love for Stoner music. Back in those days it was called ‘Acid Rock’, yes, even Sabbath. So there is much to celebrate in my world these days, and last night was a celebration of ‘new’ music with a mind-blowing 60’s, 70’s edge. Expect more specials like this in the future..

HAVE A BLOODY VALENTINES DAY (Hope to see you at the ANVIL show on Valentines Day)

Dungeon Fun with Jason Shwartzwalder from the KADAVER DOLLS

Hey Fiends,

Had a great time in the ‘ol Dungeon last night. We had some friends over and had a bit of a party before the broadcast. We usually have a few revelers that stop in for the broadcast, but last night was..umm..yeah..A PARTY!! One of our revelers was JASON SCHWARTZWALDER from KADAVER DOLLS. We pulled him out of the GREEN room and had a much needed chat about all the exciting things going on with Kadaver Dolls. The band was signed at THE ROCK SOLID PRESSURE INDUSTRY SHOWCASE back in 2013. And their CD Release Party is THIS FRIDAY NIGHT at THE CROWBAR in Ybor City. I’ve been rallying for this band for many years. I’ve watched them, and helped them, become one of the best metal acts in Florida. It’s always a joyous occasion when one of the bands we work with closely get’s a record deal. Soon, Kadaver Dolls will be a household name, and we almost feel like proud Parents. To all bands reading this, success is built upon perseverance  and dedication to your art. Kadaver Dolls hammered it out and weathered the storm. They kept it together and didn’t give up. If you’re in the Tampa area on Friday night. Get your ass out to Ybor City and make it a point to hit THE CROWBAR for their CD Release Show. It’s going to be a huge celebration. Another band on the bill includes PSYKOTRIBE. This is another one of our bands that was signed to Willpower Entertainment at last year’s Showcase. Other bands include FALLS UPON US, BURNING FAIR VERONA, and more..We’ll cya there!

So, we partied it up last night, and we REALLY partied it up over the past week. We had a great time at 3 shows that are definitely worth mentioning. This past Wednesday, we had a historic show at the State Theatre which included NAPALM DEATH, VOIVOD, EXHUMED, IRON REAGAN, RINGWORM, BLACK CROWN INITIATE and KADAVER DOLLS. Once again, history was made on the State Theatre stage. We really bonded with VOIVOD and IRON REAGAN throughout the long day, but what a great adventure. It’s days like these that make my job fun and memorable. Wish ALL the shows could be like this (right?). Then we had only one day to rest our old bones and gear up for the ROCK FOR R.A.K. (Random Acts Of Kindness) BENEFIT which invaded The Local 662 on Friday night. Right off the bat, I gotta say, Patty and myself were honored to be a part of this amazing benefit. I worked closely with the organizer ‘Carla Pruitt’, which was to become one of the coolest benefit’s I have ‘ever’ worked on. Not only did all our favorite bands play, like TEAM CYBERGEIST, PROGRESSIVE CHEMISTRY, THE DEFIANT, THE DOOD, and FROSTFANG, but the atmosphere for the cause was always in the forefront. Above all, it was a smashing success for ‘Random Acts Of Kindness. Carla is a truly dedicated, and giving person. With all the bullshit, and bad people I have to deal with in this industry. It’s a pleasure just to know that someone is actually doing good things for people. And yes, there will be a PART 2 in May. But that wasn’t the end of our run. We still had to be somewhat alive for ‘another’ show at the 662 on Saturday night. By this time, the phrase ‘Walking Zombie’ comes to mind. Yeah, I was barely able to stand on Saturday night. These 3 day runs are taking a toll on my old bones. I was pretty delirious, but it was a good show. Bands included REFUSAL OF FATE, ROCKSTARR BENTLEY, DEMENTED TRUTH, SOLACE AND RUIN, WICKED REVOLUTION..And even then we didn’t get out of there till after 1:00am. All the stuff I wanted to accomplish on Sunday was scrapped. I slept all day! But was ready to party last night..Hope you all tuned in!!

CEA SERIN: The Illumination Mask (Nightmare Records) debut

AT THE GATES: Heroes And Tombs (Century Media) debut track

CROWNED BY FIRE: Crowned By Fire (Chrome Mountain Records) debut track

MARDUK: 503  (Century Media)  debut

GILBY CLARKE (featuring SLASH) Tijuana Jail (Virgin Records) debut

LORDS OF THE TRIDENT: Song Of The Wind & Sea (Junko Johnson Records) debut

KADAVER DOLLS: Bow Down (Willpower Entertainment) debut track

So, I was bitching and ranting in last week’s blog about the new breed of internet ‘people’. I was merely reflecting my passion for the old days of Myspace. I posed the question ‘What Would Happen If The Internet Went Off Completely?’..It was a viable question. I mean, would you survive? It actually stirred up a bit of controversy. I even took this question out in the field, and I found out that tons of people actually think like me (WHAT?) Yes, a lot of people are actually ready if the internet get’s hacked to pieces ‘or’ it becomes too unsafe to even go online. One person even said ‘What If The Electricity Grids Get Hacked In America?’. Now THAT even opens up a whole new can of worms. I’m sure everyone with generators will survive (right?) But it was comforting to know that my old school ways (I’m over 50) were more realized then I imagined. Facebook, Twitter, AND Instagram were hacked last week. Believe me..IT’S COMING!! Don’t throw away your Vinyl, CD’s, or DVD’s..Just sayin

NEXT WEEK ON THE ROCK SOLID PRESSURE SHOW: We’re going to be doing one of our ‘Stoner Fantastic’ broadcasts. We just received a ton of new releases, and a lot of them are kickass stoner bands. So tune in next week, and have the bong at the ready!!

And don’t forget to check our site for upcoming concerts, past broadcasts, and TV Episodes
